The Red City Hall is nearby from the Alexanderplatz and the Nikolai Quarter. This edifice was built between 1861 and 1870 by Hermann Friedrich Waesemann. It owes its name to the red bricks of its walls.
The massive complex comprising several wings enclosing three courtyards was severely damaged during the war and restored in the fifties. The ground plan of the building takes up an entire roadblock. The 200m long terra-cotta frieze on the facade is |

worth attention: it tells the story of Berlin, right from its foundation.
A flag with a coat of arms, the Berlin bear, flies 74 m up at the top of the tower. Since 1991 the City Hall has housed the Chancellery of the Senate and the Lord Mayor of Berlin. The two bronze sculptures by F.Cremer, standing in front of the building, remind us of the reconstruction of Berlin after the war: "Rubble women" and "Reconstruction worker" from 1958. |
